Estudio Escondido is 2km from town. It's not essential, but we would recommend bringing a car so you can be in town in a few minutes, though Orgiva town centre is only a leisurely half hour walk away.
Our favourite lazy pastime is to sit outside a bar in the shade either in the high street or the main plaza - and people watch! We can be can be sure it won't be long before a passing friend joins us! A morning coffee, fresh fruit juice and a tostada breakfast is ideal, or maybe you prefer a glass of beer or wine and some tapas at lunchtime. There are plenty of inexpensive restaurants serving traditional, local cuisine and pizzas.
Also in town you will find the 1599 statue of Christ of the Expiration in the parish church, Nuestra Señora de las Expectación and a stroll through the old town streets of the Barrio Alto will lead you to The Hermitage of San Sebastian which overlooks the the town.
The town boasts a municipal swimming pool and sports centre, a library, launderettes, tourist information centre and plenty of interesting architecture.
Two very special times of year when the town comes alive are in Spring for Semana Santa (Holy Week) when the statues of both Jesus Christ and Mary are carried in procession from the church around the town. Also in Holy Week there is a 5 day Made in The Alpujarras Fair where local craftsmen display and sell their top quality handiwork.
Then the over last weekend in September/early October is the Feria de San Miguel, a four day fiesta based on the religious feast of Michaelmas. The streets and plazas are closed to traffic and town becomes one huge bar with people enjoying all things traditionally Spanish. Flamenco costumes, music and dancing, discos till the early hours, giant street paellas, horse events, photography competitions, box cart racing, a fairground and fireworks, so something for all ages and tastes.
Exploring slightly further afield, but within an easy drive are the Sierra Nevada National Park and the charming white villages of the Poqueira Gorge which are both popular with hikers and mountain bikers. The area is a favourite with birdwatchers too and even from our land where there is a huge variety of garden birds, we have also seen Booted Eagles, Egyptian Vultures, Hoopoes and Bee Eaters. And if your preference is riding, there are local riding centres which organise mountain trekking. Also close by is the spa town of Lanjaron (15 mins) where you can indulge yourself in the spring waters and massage treatments.
Taking the motorway south you will arrive at the safe, clean beaches of the Costa Tropical (30 mins). Here you will find water sports of all kinds including paddle-boarding, canoeing, sailing and scuba diving and for the young at heart who like a splashy slide there is a water-park at Almuñécar. Try one of the chiringuitas (beach bar/restaurants) for an amazing seafood platter.
In the opposite direction is Granada (60 mins), as well as the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort (75 mins). It is said you can spend the morning on the ski slopes and then enjoy a late lunch on the beach!
Our recommendation is to fully immerse yourselves in Andalucian history, culture, art and food by spending at least one truly memorable day meandering through Granada taking in the architecture. You will need to book tickets to visit The Alhambra. Touring its gardens and palaces will transport you to a time of great splendour and civilisation which to this day define this very special part of the world.
Also recommended, but requiring a few hours in the car and probably involving an overnight stay are the iconic Andalucian cities of Cordoba, Seville, Jerez, Huelva, Cadiz, Jaen, Almeria and Ronda.

Address: 33D Carretera de los Agostines, Orgiva, 18400, Andalucia, Spain
Take the road from Orgiva to Tijola, the GR4202. Soon after the 2km sign there is a serious double bend where you will see on the left Cortijo de la Trocha and Las Mariposas. IMMEDIATELY after Las Mariposas there is a track, through what looks like a tree lined tunnel, take it. Travel 50 metres further and a concrete ramp with a stone terrace wall will appear on the right - with a Cortijo Escondido sign. Continue up the ramp to the top through gates to the car park at the top where we will meet you.
